Power Tools and Safety

Using drawings generated from the CAD room team, the wheel axle sleeves were cut to rough length on the chop saw.  It was the first experience with cutting tools for some students and we learned a lot about the safety and the proper clamping of the stock before the cut.

We also learned how to use analog calipers to measure accuracy to .001" (thousandths of an inch).

Some of the build room team cut the narrow spacers for the wheel axles from aluminum tubing.  A band saw was used to cut the tube stock to rough lengths...

A scribe mark was accurately etched in the tubing and the tubes then carefully sanded down to the mark using a belt sander with a medium grit paper.

Safety FIRST is our motto in the Robotics Build Room...

An excellent safety teaching moment presented itself tonight with regard to pony tails and loose fitting sleeves.

With all the cutting and sanding, proper use of the analog calipers was essential and provided a good learning opportunity for the neophytes!

Continued work on threaded axle rods
made use of the metal lathe as well.

Patient mentors really make a difference when working with unfamiliar machinery!
